Product Review: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden

Okay this review has been a long time coming, I actually got this about a month or two ago, but I've been pretty lazy with my reviews lately, sorry! Like I said, I will be posting more reviews, etc, once school is over.

So I know this will shock most makeup addicts when I say this, but I have actually never used the original primer potion...or the Too Faced Shadow Insurance...or any eyeshadow primer to be honest. Wait, scratch that, I did test out one by Sally Hansen, but it didn't really seem to do much. So technically, this is my first eyeshadow primer. I guess I felt like I never really needed one before, but now that I've used one I can honestly say that it does help a lot to use one!

This is the description of the Urban Decay Primer Potion, taken from the Sephora website:

What it is:
"An eye prep product that provides smoother, longer-lasting, and absolutely crease-proof eyeshadow—and is now offered in a very-wearable, tawny, matte hue."

What it does:
"Eyeshadow Primer Potions from Urban Decay are unmatched in the beauty industry! The genie in these bottles fulfills three wishes: eyeshadow that lasts, more vibrant and lasting color, and absolutely NO creasing. Apply Primer Potion to lids before shadow application and it dries down almost instantly, creating smooth lids that are super-powered eyeshadow magnets. Urban Decay offers several unique shades in their Eyeshadow Primer Potions, but all boast the same unbelievable function. Eden is a matte-finish, tawny hue and gives you a stunning "no makeup" look when worn alone or complements other eyeshadows worn in combination. Packaged in a pretty genie bottle, all these Potions are applied with a magic wand and flocked applicator."

This is what the packaging looks like, very pretty, just like a genie bottle. The outer container is made of a rubberized material, not the same as the lid

They changed the applicator foot to a flocked tip, I think to make appliction easier and also so that you are able to get all of the product out of the bottom and sides of the tube

This swatch shows that it is definitely lighter and matte, whereas I think the original blends in more with the skin and is translucent (correct me if I'm wrong please :P)

This is what it looks like blended out, I accidentally put too much on my hand so there's quite a bit of product as you can see. They say you can wear this alone for a natural look, but I actually don't like this color by itself, it's too light and more of a grayish tint than skintone colored. Especially if you have a darker skintone this might look a little weird and unnatural. The true color is more at the top of my hand, my camera flash washed it out at the bottom of the picture.

This is what eyeshadow looks like applied over it. I tried to wipe most of it off on the left before I applied the shadow, but there is still a little that was left over. As you can see, the swatch on the right that has the primer still applied looks more vibrant and the color adheres to the skin better.

My thoughts on this product:

Well, this being my first eyeshadow primer, I can definitely say that it does help to have one. It makes my eyeshadows stick better and have less fallout, and the colors tend to be more vibrant and last longer. I don't really notice any creasing, but to be honest, I never really had a big problem with that before using primer.  The applicator does make for easy application, although sometimes I think too much product comes out and I have to either wipe it off on the lip of the tube, or just barely tap it on my lids. I don't like the color by itself, to me I just find it's too light and washes my eyes out. The formula is creamy and feels a bit thick, maybe a little like liquid concealer? But it dries quickly so you don't have to wait to apply your shadows. I've heard a lot of people compare e.l.f's eyeshadow primers to this (well, the original one) and some say they are equal, and others say the e.l.f. one is better. I haven't tried the e.l.f. one, but since this one costs around $18 and the e.l.f. probably costs between $1-$3, I'm itching to try it. I would like to try the original primer potion and see if there is a big difference between the two.

Rating:
3.8/5

Pros: helps eyeshadows last longer and gives them more vibrancy, packaging

Cons: don't like the color, a bit pricey for me, a little thick

Would I repurchase? Hmm, probably not...but I still want to try the original one.

Anyone else use this? Or the original? Let me know your opinions on this, or any eyeshadow primer that you use or think I should try!
