Product Review: Loreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base

Okay, so in a previous post I mentioned how excited I was to try this since I have been looking for a new face primer.

To refresh your memory in case you missed my previous post, this is the product that I am reviewing

So I have finally tried it out....and I hate it!

Okay, hate is a strong word, but I am seriously disappointed in this.  Why? Let me count the ways:

1.) The price.  It's about $12.99 which is kinda expensive for a drugstore brand, and you only get 0.5 oz of product.

2.) It's in a jar. How unpractical is that?

3.) The texture. At first I was excited because I thought it would have a smooth creamy consistency. Boy was I wrong. This stuff feels like...mashed potatoes. Seriously. And not even creamy mashed potatoes, but extremely thick and grainy mashed potatoes. Yeah, gross huh? Now just imagine rubbing that across your face!

4.) This claims to hide your pores and banish imperfections...which it did neither. Instead, it made me feel like I had a thick,  sticky, potatoey mess on my face, which didn't do anything to help my makeup go on smoother at all.

Rating: 1/5

Pros: um....it's pink?

Cons: Well first off, it's in a jar, which isn't very practical;  it's thick, grainy, and makes you feel like you're wearing potatoes on your face; it's too expensive for the quality of product and you barely even  get any product; and it doesn't do anything to help your skin look better or your makeup go on smoother

Man I was so disappointed in this, which is weird because I usually love Loreal products. I hated this so much that I took it back, which is pretty serious for me because I hardly ever return something, even if I don't like it that much. I was curious to try their new colored bases, but after this experience I' m kind of hesitant to. We'll see.

And now I can't eat mashed potatoes anymore...:P

Just kidding about the last part :)

Note: this is my own personal opinion and should not deter you from making your own judgements of this product. Products work differently for everyone, so if you feel the need to buy this product, don't let my own experience halt you from experimenting for yourself. And this product was purchased with my own money :P

Oh my. Such a waste on the $12.99. -__-

Oh they had a sample jar in Walgreens that I tried today... but sucks because you can only put it on your hand, which is nothing like putting it on your face! Thanks for doing this review so we know not to buy.. sorry it didn't work out for you :(

Oh gosh, that seems like such a horrible product! >.<
Thanks for sharing though!

heavenly: yeah, but i returned it and got something else, so now i'm happy :)
kechiko: what did you think of it when you tried it? i mean, this is just my opinion, but others may end up liking it, it just depends on each person's tastes...are you going to try it? if so, you should buy it at cvs, that way if you don't like it you can return it, that's what i did :P
eclectisatire: well i didn't like it, but others may, i don't want to deter others from trying it for themselves, this is just based on my own experience with it :) thanks for reading my post though!

It's good that you're able to send it back eventhough you've opened the product. In Singapore, it's not allowed. Once opened, you're not allowed to exchange with something else.

it really does look like mashed potatoes! but it's good that you got to return the item back

darn-I'm disappointed bc I too wanted to try it but thanks I guess b/c you saved me from wasting $12.99 plus tax! :)

I tried a sample that came in a magazine and at first I thought it was dried out bc it was so darn thick. I only used half the sample and I liked the results actually. Maybe people are using too much of it...?

I heard of people saying using monistat chafing powder-gel as their holy grail face primer. Have you tried that?

liana123 said...

valhhydrick: your welcome for the review, but please don't take it as professional advice or anything, this was just my opinion on how it worked for me, you might like it! don't be afraid to try it for yourself :) let me know if you do!
sarasonne: i'm glad you liked it! this review was just how it worked for me, but products work differently for everybody. thanks for reading my review though! :)
ren_kr: actually that is my current primer! i like it, it gives you a really smooth base..i have just been wanting to try a cream base though bc the monistat is silicone based. you can buy it at wal-mart or target in the feminine hygiene section, you should try it! let me know if you do :)

I use the Monistat as primer - got the idea from a youtube video from a girl doing a makeup tutorial - IT IS WONDERFUL!!! My makeup glides on so smoothly - Don't know how I have spent the years without it. Plus, it's only around $5/6!

yeah, i love it too! so inexpensive and it works :)

Wow... have you never used a primer before?

I found this to be comparable to Lancome or Clarins, both of which will run you in the $30-$40 range.

I thought the texture was average for a primer and at $12.99, a bargain since it made my foundation last all day just as the higher priced primers do.

To anyone who is considering trying it, I would encourage you to, because the #1 complaint about foundation is that it doesn't wear all day. A primer will help solve that issue. Always be sure you moisturize your face first and let it soak in for 5-30 minutes.

You will also want to let the primer settle on your face for at least 5 minutes (some primers suggest a 30 minute wait, but I think that's extreme).

If you can indeed return it to your CVS, get it there and take it back if you're not happy with it. I'll be getting it once I run through my stock of Clarins primer.

yes i use primers but i just didn't like the consistency of this one, it felt really grainy and thick and it didn't do anything for my skin or makeup. but i'm not discouraging anyone else from buying it, i'm just sharing my experience with it

In the most recent Vogue issue there was a sample of this, I tried it on today. I really liked. (:

you know whats funny is the one i got i hated but i was at cvs and they had a sample out and i tried it on my hand and kinda liked it...weird huh? it felt totally different than the one i had bought, maybe i got a bad one?

Hi! First let me say I LOVE your website! I guess everyone's different. This base works beautifully for me. I wonder if you got a bad batch. I also think just a tiny bit goes a long way. I was loving the new M. age rewind primer, too. But after trying this I had to switch. It does a brilliant job of smoothing out my undereye lines so the foundation doesn't settle and crease there. And my foundation looks luminous and velvet-like. My makeup stays put all day and night when I use this first. No need to powder throughout the day either. I'm an online review hound and had to try it after reading all the positive reviews. I'm glad I did! So curious about the Monistat, though. Can't wait to try that, too. :-)

omg thank you, i really appreciate hearing that! :) you know, i keep trying out the testers at cvs and target, and other places, and its actually kinda growing on me....i mustve gotten a bad batch or something bc it feels totally different from the one i got!

I really loved this product and I'm a veteran makeup user, have worked as an artist and use tons of lines -- Trish, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Chantacaille, Armani, etc. A little goes a long way. Like less than a pea size. I am oily, have larger pores on my nose and on either side of my nose and this made them look airbrushed.

i'm glad it worked for you! maybe i got a bad batch or something?

this is the worst primer i've ever tried! it is like putting paste on your skin and even "pills" like an old sweater if you rub it in too much. it's so horrible i thought it was something i was doing wrong because it made no senes that anyone would approve this stuff, so i tried it w/o sunscreen, thinking the sunscreen was causing it to lump up like it does, but it was exactly the same, and i've even tried it w/o foundation over it, thinking maybe it was bad foundation, but no -- it' s a mistake and i don't expect it'll stay on the shelves long. unfortunately i didn't keep my receipt, but i'm thinking about sending it back to the company itself. Avoid!

OMg! I hope they never disontinue this. Im a guy! who has some red to conceal etc and of course dont wanna be wearing heavy liquid or cream makeup. Only used this a day! And its Great I was apprehensive but the pink more of a white texture actually evens skin! I dont know how the reviewer was applying but for me to take time out to post this it is good I hope it lasts! A larger size would be nice

I also love this! I have never used a base before but, now I don't think I'll ever go without it. It doesn't feel grainy or like mashed potatoes. I think the reviewer got a bad batch. It's very creamy and feels silky smooth on my face.

liana123 said...

i might've gotten a bad batch bc i swatched it a couple more times at various drugstores and it felt way different from the one i had!
